Make it, make a million
The Barclays
By Paul Mahoney
At Ridgewood Country Club
One shot at winning $1million for a hole-in-one. That was the chance 10 fans had at Ridgewood Country Club after the third round of The Barclays. Their names were picked randomly by a computer from all those that registered before the tournament. Half the money from Barclays’ ‘Make It, Make A Million’ challenge would go to the Children’s Aid and Family Services charity. The remaining $500,000 would go home with the winner. Men hit from 150 yards, women from 135 yards. Ten shots later, no one holed out. No $1 million champagne moment. Shame. There were slices, hooks, shanks, chunks and tops.
One contestant was so nervous, she couldn’t get the ball to stay on the tee peg. Just real golfers doing what real golfers do best. And no one got hurt. Closest to the pin prize went to Louis Bouchard for the men and Joan Scrivanich for the women. They each won a Golftech lesson courtesy of ESPN New York. The Barclays will make a contribution to the charity to add to the $38 the tournament has donated to charity since 1968. Hey, at least no one shouted: “Get in the hole.” Just as well, really.

Alternative prizes not worth $1…
Best cap:. Ryan McCullough
For having to chutzpah to step up to the tee first and wear his cap back to front Happy Gilmore style. He missed the green. Of course he did.

Best shirt.: Ron Kraft
Anyone who has the courage to wear a Stars and Stripes shirt must be a potential Ryder Cup wildcard, right? Er, no. Missed green to the right. He was late for a wedding too. Hope it wasn’t his own.
Best excuse : Joan Scrivanich
“My husband is a golfer; I’m a shopper. I hit my first golf balls yesterday. Tore up my sister’s lawn. If I win a million, she says I have to buy her new grass.” How much is grass seed?
