Your Daily Phil at The Barclays: Round 3
Another exhilarating day of ups and downs for Phil fans.
By Paul Mahoney
Four birdies on the back nine (his first nine) got the galleries whoopin' and hollerin' especially when they witnessed an Augusta-like four at the par-five 12th as Phil made the turn in just 32 strokes. But just as Phil was pressing the pedal to the metal, the wheels fell off with back-to-back bogeys at the 5th and 6th. Ah well, that's Phil's DNA and that, folks, is why Everybody Love Phil (Not Raymond). He posted a third and final round of three under par 68 to finish The Hurricane Irene Barclays Championship at eight under par in the middle of the field. Onwards to Boston next week for more thrills and spills from Phil.
Good day: That birdie at the five 12th. A monster drive of 309 yards found the middle of the fairway. He then fizzed a fairway wood 253 yards to 40 feet and just missed out on the eagle. But who doesn't love a tap in birdie?
Bad day: That bogey at the par five 5th. He hooked his drive 278 yards into the right rough then hit an iron 178 yards into a fairway bunker. He compounded his errors by then hitting into a greenside bunker. He splashed out and three-putted from 12 feet, missing a tap in for par. It was ever thus with Phil.
