Steady start for Mickelson on stormy day.

By Paul Mahoney

Phil finished two under par with four holes left to complete his first round. After a bogey at the 3rd and a bunch of pars, his round turned on a lucky ricochet at the 8th. His approach to the green flew straight left towards the spectators gathered on a mound. Mickelson’s ball bounced off the bank and trundled back down towards to green before coming to rest 12 feet from the hole. He duly holed for birdie. It proved the turning point. He birdied the next and the 12th to be nicely placed in the chasing pack, five shots off the pace but with four holes in hand.

Good day: The putts are starting to drop again for Phil who has shown signs lately that he might need to seek comfort in a belly putter. He was tied 19th with just 22 putts.

Bad day: As usual these days, Mickelson’s driving was as erratic as a college graduate at the wheel of his father’s car for the first time. He managed just 40% accuracy.
