Wright is an American country music artist. In 2002, Wright was named "Woman of the Year" by the American Legion Auxiliary for her career achievements, her charity work and her support of the U.S. Armed Forces.
On the strength of her debut album in 1994, the Academy of Country Music (ACM) named Wright Top New Female Vocalist in 1995. Wright's first Top 40 country hit came in 1997 with "Shut Up and Drive. "Two years later, her fourth album yielded her first number one single, the title track, "Single White Female. "Overall, Wright has released seven studio albums on various labels, and has charted more than 15 singles on the country charts. As of May 2010, Wright's previous eight albums had sold more than 1 million copies in the United States.
In addition to the Chely Wright concert, several other initiatives are in place to honor the men and women of the U.S. Armed Services during tournament week. The Barclays will once again offer complimentary admission all week for all active, retired and reserve military and their dependents. Those eligible can download free tickets by visiting www.birdiesforthebrave.com and presenting their military ID and ticket at the gate. Also, as part of The Barclays Military Appreciation Day on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 54 members of the U.S. military will serve as honorary caddies during the morning and afternoon pro-am, a way to give them a one-of-a-kind experience and interaction with the PGA TOUR's best players.
All active, retired, and reserve military and their dependents, including veterans, will once again have access to the Birdies for the Brave Patriots' Outpost presented by Barclays, a hospitality chalet solely for current or past members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Open Wednesday at 10 a.m. through Sunday, the air-conditioned tent is located on the 9th fairway and will include interactive games provided by BAE Systems. Free food and drink were generously donated by Chick-Fil-A, Applebee's, Whole Foods, and Coca-Cola, and various ceremonies and activities will take place throughout the week. A Military Appreciation Day Ceremony will be held in the Patriots' Outpost on Wednesday at 1 p.m. , featuring a color guard, National Anthem performance, and keynote speaker Brigadier General Glen Rieth from the New Jersey National Guard. At 2 p.m. , a PGA TOUR player (TBD) will stop by for a meet and greet and autograph session in the Patriots' Outpost.
Additional activities taking place in the Patriots' Outpost during The Barclays include a care package assembly for U.S. Troops on Thursday at 12 p.m., with product donated by Whole Foods; a New Jersey military celebration in collaboration with "Bonds of Courage" on Friday at 2 p.m.; and a reception for cadets from Seton Hall, Rutgers and Princeton on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Barclays, the first of four events in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, which culminate with the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola, visits Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J., for the first time, August 23-28. The top-125 players in the FedExCup points standings through the Wyndham Championship (August 15-21) will qualify for The Barclays.
About The Barclays
The Barclays has been a part of the PGA TOUR schedule since 1967 when Jack Nicklaus won the inaugural event at Westchester Country Club. Since that time, some of the greatest players in the game have earned the title including World Golf Hall of Famers Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller, Raymond Floyd, Seve Ballesteros, Hale Irwin, Curtis Strange and the new defending champion, Heath Slocum, 2009 winner of The Barclays. Many of the world's current top players have won the event as well, including two-time champions Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia, and four-time champion Vijay Singh. As the first of four playoff events, The Barclays plays a leading role in the FedExCup, the season-long competition that is the centerpiece of the PGA TOUR season.
