Last chance at this week's Wyndham Championship to make top 125 in FedExCup rankings
EDISON, N.J. – Next week, the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup begin with The Barclays, but only the top 125 players in the FedExCup standings will be teeing it up at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J. Those who don't earn enough points via the last event of the Regular Season – this week's Wyndham Championship – will be on the sidelines as the race for the FedExCup title, and its $10 million bonus, begins on August 25 with the first round of The Barclays.
With his win last week at the PGA Championship, rookie Keegan Bradley vaulted into the No. 4 position in FedExCup points, trailing only Nick Watney (No. 1), Steve Stricker (No. 2) and Luke Donald (No. 3). The top seven in FedExCup points are not only guaranteed a tee time at Plainfield Country Club next week, but are also secure in making it all the way to the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola, the culminating event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. Rounding out the top seven are Phil Mickelson (No. 5), K.J. Choi (No. 6) and Bubba Watson (No. 7).
At the other end of the spectrum, any player currently ranked No. 110 or below in FedExCup points needs to play well at this week's Wyndham Championship to secure a spot at the first event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. In 2010, it took 380 points to finish the Regular Season at No. 125 on the FedExCup standings and qualify for The Barclays. While the number may be different for the 2011 Playoffs, using 380 as a benchmark, here is quick approximation of what the "bubble boys" need to do to make The Barclays field:
| Player | FedExCup Rank | Approximate Finish Needed This Week |
| Michael Thompson | 110 | 60th |
| Joe Ogilvie | 111 | 54th |
| David Hearn | 112 | 53rd |
| Billy Mayfair | 113 | 44th |
| James Driscoll | 114 | 44th |
| Steve Flesch | 115 | 43rd |
| Stuart Appleby | 116 | 42nd |
| Josh Teater | 117 | 40th |
| Rod Pampling | 118 | 39th |
| Steven Bowditch | 119 | 38th |
| Arjun Atwal | 120 | 30th |
| Heath Slocum | 121 | 28th |
| Matt Jones | 122 | 19th |
| David Mathis | 123 | 17th |
| Cameron Beckman | 124; | 15th |
| Camilo Villegas | 125 | 13th |
| Ernie Els | 126 | 13th |
| William McGirt | 127 | 12th |
| Dean Wilson | 128 | 12th |
| Padraigh Harrington | 130 | 12th |
| Ben Curtis | 131 | 9th |
| Roland Thatcher | 133 | 9th |
| Chris Riley | 137 | 7th |
| Zack Miller | 138 | 7th |
| Kent Jones | 139 | 6th |
| Tag Ridings | 140 | 6th |
| Matt McQuillan | 141 | 6th |
"Once again, it's shaping up to be a fantastic, exciting field The Barclays," said The Barclays Executive Director Peter Mele. "Fans will get the best of both worlds next week – players in top form looking to cap off their seasons with a FedExCup win, and players making a late charge to be that ‘Cinderella Story' of the Playoffs, like Heath Slocum was when he won here in 2009. We're certain that our competitive rounds will sell out before tournament week, so we encourage any fans who have yet to purchase their tickets to do so before it's too late."
About The Barclays
The Barclays has been a part of the PGA TOUR schedule since 1967 when Jack Nicklaus won the inaugural event at Westchester Country Club. Since that time, some of the greatest players in the game have earned the title including World Golf Hall of Famers Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller, Raymond Floyd, Seve Ballesteros, Hale Irwin, Curtis Strange and the new defending champion, Heath Slocum, 2009 winner of The Barclays. Many of the world's current top players have won the event as well, including two-time champions Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia, and four-time champion Vijay Singh. As the first of four playoff events, The Barclays plays a leading role in the FedExCup, the season-long competition that is the centerpiece of the PGA TOUR season. In 2010, The Barclays will be held at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus New Jersey, on August 24-29.
