Two weeks remain for players "on the bubble" to earn a spot in The Barclays field

It's a race to the Playoffs for several notables on the outside looking in

EDISON, N.J. – The first round of The Barclays is a little more than two weeks away, and the heat is on several notable players who are not yet assured of a start in the first event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. Familiar names like Camillo Villegas, Ernie Els, Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington, among others, need to turn in strong finishes at this week's PGA Championship or next week's Wyndham Championship in order to earn a spot in The Barclays field. Only the top 125 in the FedExCup standings will tee it up at The Barclays, which visits Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J., for the first time, August 23-28.

"With two weeks remaining, we've got an impressive list of players guaranteed to be in The Barclays field, but it will also be exciting to watch as some big stars fight for a chance to compete in the Playoffs altogether," said The Barclays Executive Director Peter Mele. "I think the intrigue of the PGA TOUR Regular Season has really generated a lot of interest in the Playoffs, and we've seen record ticket sales here for our first trip to Plainfield. It's looking like our competitive rounds may sell out before tournament week, so we encourage our fans to take a cue from the PGA TOUR's best – make your move now to ensure you're not on the outside looking in come The Barclays week."

The follow players are on the FedExCup 125 bubble:

Player Rank Worth Noting
Camilo Villegas 125 In 2008, captured final two Playoff events to finish third in FedExCup
Ernie Els 126 One of five players to appear in all four previous TOUR Championships in FedExCup era
Tiger Woods 129 Two-time FedExCup champion (2007 and 2009)
Padraig Harrington 130 Finished seventh in FedExCup in 2009
Justin Leonard 142 Finished eighth in FedExCup in 2008
Louis Oosthuizen 145 2010 British Open champion hopes to mend rookie season
Paul Casey 147 Turf-toe injury has hampered play after playing TOUR Championship in 2010

In 2010, it took 380 points to finish the Regular Season at No. 125 on the FedExCup standings and qualify for The Barclays. While the number may be different for the 2011 Playoffs, using 380 as a benchmark, here is quick approximation of what the "bubble boys" might need to do over the next two weeks to make The Barclays field:

  • Camilo Villegas – Needs one 15th-place finish or two 41st-place finishes.
  • Ernie Els – Needs one 15th-place finish or two 41st-place finishes.
  • Tiger Woods – Needs one 14th-place finish or two 40th-place finishes.
  • Padraig Harrington – Needs one 12-place finish or two 36th-place finishes.
  • Justin Leonard – Needs one sixth-place finish (not in the PGA Championship field).
  • Louis Oosthuizen – Needs one fifth-place finish or two 17th-place finishes.
  • Paul Casey – Needs one fourth-place finish or two 14th-place finishes.

Of course, there is more to the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup than simply qualifying. Players will use the next two weeks of the Regular Season to improve their positions throughout the standings, giving them a better chance of advancing beyond The Barclays and making a run at the FedExCup title. Forty-nine of the top 50 in the current FedExCup standings are in the field at the PGA Championship, and with 600 points awarded to the winner, 11 players mathematically can pass No. 1 Nick Watney with a victory this week.

About The Barclays

The Barclays has been a part of the PGA TOUR schedule since 1967 when Jack Nicklaus won the inaugural event at Westchester Country Club. Since that time, some of the greatest players in the game have earned the title including World Golf Hall of Fame members Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller, Raymond Floyd, Seve Ballesteros, Hale Irwin, Curtis Strange and the new defending champion, Matt Kuchar, 2010 winner of The Barclays. Many of the world’s current top players have won the event as well, including two-time champions Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia, and four-time champion Vijay Singh. As the first of four events in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, The Barclays plays a leading role in the FedExCup, the season-long competition that is the centerpiece of the PGA TOUR season. In 2011, The Barclays will be held at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J., on August 23-28.
